Flat Cycling Routes in Europe

Flat cycling routes are the secret to an enjoyable first bike tour — or any tour where you want to cover distance comfortably without worrying about the hills. Europe has some exceptional flat cycle paths, and Central Europe in particular offers hundreds of kilometres of river cycling where the gradient is so gentle you barely notice it. Here is where to go for flat cycling in Europe without sacrificing scenery.

Quick answer

The flattest multi-day cycling routes in Europe are the major river paths: the Danube Cycle Path in Austria, the Rhine Cycle Path in Germany, the Loire à Vélo in France, and the Elbe Cycle Path in lower Germany. Of these, the Austrian Danube section (Passau to Vienna) combines the flattest terrain with the best scenery — making it the top pick for cyclists who want both comfort and reward.

Who is this for

Flat routes suit: first-time cycle tourists who are uncertain about their fitness; cyclists with knee or joint issues who need to minimise climbing; groups with significant fitness differences between members; older cyclists or families cycling with children; anyone recovering from injury; and anyone who simply prefers to enjoy the scenery from the saddle rather than pushing uphill. There is no shame in preferring flat — some of Europe's most beautiful cycling is on pancake-flat river paths.

What counts as flat?

In cycling tour terms, flat typically means under 500 metres of total elevation gain per 100 km. Very flat means under 200 metres per 100 km. For reference:

RouteElevation gain per 100 kmRating
Vienna to Budapest (Danube)~120 m / 100 kmVery flat
Passau to Vienna (Danube)~280 m / 100 kmFlat
Dresden to Hamburg (Elbe)~100 m / 100 kmVery flat
Rhine Cycle Path (Mainz to Cologne)~150 m / 100 kmVery flat
Loire à Vélo (Nevers to Nantes)~200 m / 100 kmFlat

Best flat cycling routes in Central Europe

1. Vienna to Budapest — the flattest scenic route in Central Europe

This section of the Danube Cycle Path is the definition of flat river cycling. The terrain from Vienna to Budapest rises barely 400 metres over 300 kilometres — less elevation change than some urban cycling routes. The path follows the river across the Slovak lowlands and into the Hungarian plain, passing through Bratislava and the Danube Bend before arriving in Budapest. Wind is the only wild card; the exposed sections across Rye Island can produce significant headwinds. But on a calm day, this is cycling at its most relaxed and rewarding. Three national capitals in one flat week.

2. Passau to Vienna — flat with one short exception

The Austrian Danube section is mostly flat, with the Schlögener Schlinge loop near Aschach being the one section that climbs briefly (and a detour around it exists). The Wachau Valley appears mountainous from the photographs — steep vineyard walls, dramatic castle spires — but the cycling path itself stays close to the river and never climbs the valley sides. You experience the dramatic landscape from below, looking up, rather than by climbing through it. Total elevation gain Passau to Vienna is around 900 metres over 320 km — very manageable spread across a week.

3. Elbe: Wittenberg to Hamburg — the flattest long-distance route in Germany

Below Wittenberg, the Elbe Cycle Path enters the North German Plain. This section — roughly 300 km to Hamburg — is one of the flattest long-distance cycling routes in Germany. Total elevation gain is under 300 metres for the whole stretch. The landscape of river meadows, oxbow lakes, and the Elbe Biosphere Reserve is not as dramatic as the Saxon section, but it has a quiet, atmospheric quality that grows on you over several days of riding. Big skies, herons, and the smell of river mud.

4. Loire à Vélo, France (800 km, Nevers to Saint-Nazaire)

France's premier flat cycling route follows the Loire through a string of Renaissance châteaux and wine appellations. The landscape is gentler than the Danube gorges but deeply beautiful — wide river, sandbanks, poplar avenues, and the famous pale Loire light. Amboise, Blois, Chambord, Chinon, Saumur, Angers — the cultural density is extraordinary. The route is well-signed and cycling infrastructure is excellent throughout. Best sections: Tours to Saumur (particularly flat and château-rich), Saumur to Angers (Loire wine country).

5. Rhine Cycle Path, Germany (Mainz to Cologne, ~200 km)

The Rhine Gorge between Bingen and Koblenz is one of Germany's most celebrated landscapes — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a density of medieval castles per kilometre that exceeds even the Wachau. The cycling path follows both banks of the river (connected by regular ferry crossings) on almost entirely flat terrain. The river is wide and busy with barge traffic, which adds to the sense of following a great European artery. Vineyards cover the steep valley walls above the path — Riesling is the local grape, and the wine taverns are frequent and excellent.

6. Netherlands — the ultimate flat cycling country

The Netherlands is essentially an extended flat cycling infrastructure. The national LF routes (long-distance cycle paths) cover the entire country on dedicated, well-signed, almost entirely car-free paths. The coast route (LF1, 450 km from Den Helder to Sluis) passes through dunes, polders, and historic coastal towns. The interior routes pass through tulip fields, windmill landscapes, and canal systems. This is the choice for cyclists who genuinely want zero hills — the country barely rises above sea level.

7. Danube Delta, Romania

The most unusual flat cycling in Europe. Where the Danube meets the Black Sea in Romania, the river spreads into an enormous delta of channels, reed beds, and islands. Cycling here means dyke paths between fishing villages, reed boat trips, and a sense of remoteness that feels far from mainstream Europe. Infrastructure is basic and cycling is genuinely adventurous, but the flatness is total and the birdwatching extraordinary.

Tips for choosing a flat route

  • Check the actual GPX elevation profile, not just the route description — "mostly flat" can mean different things to different tour operators
  • Flat river routes often have wind as a substitute challenge — check the prevailing wind direction and choose to cycle with it rather than against it where possible (e.g., west to east on the Danube in Austria is more comfortable than east to west)
  • Flat routes often mean less shade — sun protection and early morning starts matter more on exposed flat sections
  • The flattest sections of river paths are often on dyke tops with no tree cover — pack sunscreen and a hat

When to go

Flat routes are comfortable across a wider season than hilly routes. April–October is generally viable for all the routes listed. The Loire and Rhine are particularly good in June–July when the weather is settled; the Danube and Elbe are best in May–June and September.

Practical tips

  • On flat river routes, a comfortable saddle and relaxed riding position matter more than gear ratios
  • The absence of hills means you can push further per day — be realistic about daily targets and don't over-schedule
  • Wind direction matters on exposed river paths — build in contingency for a slow, wind-affected day
  • River flooding can close flat path sections in spring — check current status before departure
