Bikes Used on Our Cycling Holidays
How to Choose the Right Bike for a Cycling Holiday
Choosing the right bike can make or break a cycling holiday. For most paved routes — like the Danube Cycle Path or the Elbe Cycle Route — a quality trekking bike is the ideal choice. It offers upright posture, wide tyres, and comfortable handling over long days in the saddle.
If you're planning longer distances (60+ km per day), tackling hilly terrain, or simply want to arrive fresh at each hotel, an e-bike is worth considering. E-bikes have transformed European cycling tourism — they open up routes that were previously too demanding and let mixed-fitness groups stay together.
Think about your fitness level, the daily distances on your tour, and the terrain profile. Our team is happy to advise which bike suits your specific route.
Which Bike Is Best for Each Tour Type
- Self-guided trekking tours — Hybrid trekking bike. Stable, reliable, easy to handle with panniers.
- Long-distance routes (80+ km/day) — E-bike strongly recommended. Reduce fatigue and enjoy the scenery.
- Mixed-terrain or gravel routes — Gravel bike or hybrid with slightly wider tyres.
- Family cycling or seniors — Low-step e-bike or hybrid for comfortable mounting and stability.
Are Bikes Included in the Tour Price?
On most of our self-guided cycling holidays, bike rental is optional — you choose whether to bring your own or rent one of ours. The rental price covers the bike for the full tour duration, a helmet, a handlebar bag, and a basic repair kit.
All bikes are serviced before each tour departure. If you experience a mechanical issue on the road, our support team is reachable by phone throughout your trip.
Accessories such as child seats, panniers, and GPS devices can be added when booking. Ask us if you're unsure what's included on your specific route.
E-Bike vs Regular Bike on European Cycling Tours
This is the most common question we get. The short answer: e-bikes suit most people on most routes, but regular bikes are perfectly fine for fit cyclists on flatter terrain.
E-bikes allow you to cover more ground, spend less energy climbing, and enjoy longer daily stages without exhaustion. They're especially popular on tours through the Austrian Alps, the Vltava Valley, or any route with significant elevation gain.
Regular trekking bikes are lighter, cheaper to rent, and give you a more traditional cycling experience. If you train regularly and your route is mostly flat, a standard bike is a great choice.
