Electric Bike Range Per Day: What to Expect on a Bike Tour

E-bike range is one of the most common questions before a cycle tour — and one of the most misunderstood. The range figure printed on a bike's spec sheet rarely matches real-world touring. Here's what actually determines how far you can go on a single charge.

Quick answer

On a flat river route with a mid-range e-bike (400–500 Wh battery), expect 60–100 km per charge on typical touring assist levels. This is more than enough for most self-guided tour stages (40–70 km/day). Charging happens overnight at your hotel — range anxiety is rarely a real issue on supported tours.

Who is this for

Anyone booking an e-bike for a multi-day tour who wants to understand how far their battery will last, what affects range, and how to manage charging logistics.

The gap between spec and reality

E-bike manufacturers publish range figures (often 100–150 km) that are measured under ideal lab conditions: light rider, flat road, low assist level, warm temperature, new battery. Real-world touring is different.

A more honest estimate for touring conditions:

Battery size Flat route, moderate assist Hilly route, higher assist
300 Wh (small) 40–60 km 25–40 km
400 Wh (standard) 55–80 km 40–60 km
500 Wh (mid-range) 70–100 km 50–75 km
625 Wh (large) 90–130 km 65–95 km
Dual battery 800+ Wh 120–180 km 90–140 km

These are ranges, not guarantees. Your actual figure will depend on the variables below.

What affects e-bike range

Assist level

The single biggest variable. Most e-bikes have 3–5 assist levels (Eco, Tour, Sport, Turbo or similar). The difference between Eco and Turbo can be a factor of 3–4× in battery consumption. On flat terrain, riding in Eco or Tour mode for most of the day and only using higher assist on hills is the most range-efficient strategy.

Terrain and elevation

Climbing uses battery dramatically faster than flat riding. On a 500 m elevation-gain day (typical for the Danube or Elbe), the impact on range is modest. On a day with 1000+ m of climbing, battery consumption can double compared to a flat day.

Rider weight

A heavier rider requires more motor assistance, especially on hills. This is a modest effect on flat routes but significant on hilly ones.

Wind

Headwinds can cut e-bike range by 15–25% because the motor has to compensate for increased resistance. River routes are often in valleys which reduce wind exposure, but exposed sections in Austria and Germany can be windy.

Temperature

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity in cold weather. Below 10°C, expect 10–20% range reduction. This matters mainly for early spring and late autumn tours. Summer tours are unaffected.

Tyre pressure and surface

Under-inflated tyres and soft gravel surfaces both increase rolling resistance, requiring more motor assistance. Keep tyres at the recommended pressure and you'll gain a few kilometres per charge.

Charging logistics on a supported tour

On self-guided tours with luggage transfer and pre-booked accommodation, charging is simple:

  • Every hotel will have access to standard power outlets
  • Most cycle-friendly hotels have dedicated e-bike charging facilities
  • A standard charge from near-empty to full takes 3–6 hours depending on battery size and charger
  • Charging overnight means you start every day with a full battery

Range anxiety on a supported tour is almost entirely psychological. If your stage is 60 km and your battery range is 80 km, you have a 20 km buffer before you need to worry.

What if I run low mid-stage?

On the Danube and Elbe routes, you pass through a town or village roughly every 10–20 km. Most cafés will let you charge for 30–45 minutes with a coffee or a meal — enough to add 15–25 km of range. This is rarely necessary but worth knowing about.

The practical tip: if you're past the halfway point and your battery is at 20%, switch to Eco mode for the second half. You'll still have assist — it will just be lighter. You won't notice the difference on flat terrain.

Range on specific Central European routes

Danube Cycle Path (Passau to Vienna)

Flat route, daily stages typically 50–65 km. A 400 Wh battery is sufficient for every stage on moderate assist. No range concerns with any standard touring e-bike.

Elbe Cycle Path

Similarly flat, stages 50–70 km. Same conclusion as Danube — any standard battery handles the daily distances easily.

Prague to Vienna (Greenways)

More varied terrain with hills in Czech Republic. Days in the Bohemian hills (days 2–3) have 400–600 m of climbing, which increases battery consumption. A 500 Wh battery is recommended for this route. A 400 Wh battery will manage but will be nearly depleted on hilly days.

E-bike vs regular bike: the range trade-off

A regular bike has infinite range — you're the engine. An e-bike has a range limit but extends your effective effort. The right choice depends on your fitness and how you want to experience the tour. For a full comparison, see our guide on E-Bike vs Regular Bike Tour.

Practical tips

  • Choose Eco or Tour mode for most of the day — save the higher modes for actual climbs
  • Check your battery level at the halfway point of each stage and adjust assist accordingly
  • Start charging as soon as you arrive at the hotel — don't leave it until evening
  • Ask for a 500 Wh or larger battery when booking for hilly routes or if you're a heavier rider
  • Don't let the battery fully discharge regularly — keeping it between 20–80% prolongs battery lifespan
  • Bring the charger in your luggage bag, not in your handlebar bag — the van carries it for you

When to go

Battery performance is best in May–September when temperatures are above 15°C. For tours in April or October, add 10–15% buffer to your range expectations.
