Tour description
The cycling route from Vienna to Trieste takes you through five historic cities connected by a shared past. Once part of the Habsburg Monarchy, Vienna, Graz, Maribor, Ljubljana, and Trieste offer a unique blend of cultures, architecture, and traditions that you can experience firsthand along the way.
Start your journey in imperial Vienna, ride through Austria’s diverse landscapes, and continue into Slovenia’s lush, unspoiled nature — a true crossroads between Central Europe and the Mediterranean. Finish your adventure in Trieste, where Mediterranean vibes meet elegant imperial heritage in what was once the monarchy’s most important seaport.
This route is not just about cycling — it’s about discovering history, local lifestyles, and regional character with every kilometer. Each landscape, town, and region adds another layer to the story, creating a memorable and immersive experience on two wheels.

Itinerary
Arrival in Vienna
Show dayStart the day with a memorable train ride on the famous Semmering Railway (included), the world’s first mountain railway and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From Semmering, you continue cycling through stunning alpine scenery, following the Mur River valley toward Bruck an der Mur. The town’s historic center and medieval buildings offer a wonderful blend of culture and nature.
Today’s route follows the Mur Cycle Path through the green landscapes of Styria. You will experience a gradual change from alpine surroundings to the milder climate of the Graz basin. Graz, the capital of Styria, welcomes you with its impressive Schlossberg hill and beautifully preserved old town, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Distance: 77-89 km
You continue through the wine hills of Slovenska Štajerska, one of Slovenia’s most important wine regions. Numerous wineries along the route offer perfect opportunities for short stops. The stage ends either in Celje, Slovenia’s third-largest city with a rich medieval past, or in Laško, famous for its thermal spa tradition and well-known beer brewery.
Distance: 66-101 km
Today you ride through traditional Slovenian villages and peaceful countryside. A highlight is the Trojan Pass, where a short climb rewards you with panoramic mountain views. Make sure to try the famous Trojan doughnuts at a local bakery. An optional train connection between Hrastnik and Sava allows you to shorten the route length of 66km. Your destination, Ljubljana, charms visitors with its lively old town, scenic riverbanks, historic bridges, and hilltop castle.
The route leads through Slovenia’s unique karst landscape, known for caves, underground rivers, and dramatic rock formations. Postojna is world-famous for its spectacular cave system, one of the largest and most visited in Europe. Nearby Predjama Castle, built directly into a cliff, offers another unforgettable highlight of the region.
Your final cycling stage brings you toward the Adriatic coast. As you approach Italy, Mediterranean influences become more noticeable and stunning sea views accompany your ride. Trieste welcomes you with a unique mix of Italian charm and Austro-Hungarian elegance. Once the main port of the Habsburg Empire, the city is now known for its grand architecture, seaside promenades, and historic café culture.

Accommodation is one of the most important parts of each trip that strongly influences the final look of it. We make our best to offer you the best possible accommodation in the prefered category. The hotels we offer are either comfortable small hotels or quite guesthouses both in 3* quality, all of it rather small and with personality than big chain. All the tours have accommodation in or near the town/village centres so you can spend the afternoon and evening after biking exploring the town itself or simply enjoy the peace of the place.
