Itinerary
Arrival to Ipswich
Show dayIpswich is the county town of Suffolk and the birthplace of Cardinal Wolsey, who served as Lord Chancellor to King Henry VIII. This lively market town has a medieval street layout, with 13 medieval churches and a number of notable historic buildings. These include the 17th-century Ancient House, known for its richly decorated plasterwork (‘pargetting’), and Christchurch Mansion, an impressive red-brick stately home that now houses a museum and is surrounded by attractive parkland. The modern waterfront provides a lively contrast, with a variety of restaurants and bars, as well as the chance to enjoy a relaxing cruise along the River Orwell.

Leave the Gipping Valley behind and cycle through some of Suffolk’s picturesque medieval villages, passing historic churches and traditional pubs along the way. Cross the ford at Kersey before continuing to Chelsworth, known for its narrow bridge and charming weavers’ cottages. The route then leads through the village of Monks Eleigh, before reaching Lavenham, where the impressive church of St Peter and St Paul towers above a remarkable collection of half-timbered medieval buildings. One of Suffolk’s most renowned wool towns, Lavenham is home to a wealth of well-preserved historic architecture.

Today’s route is a scenic circular ride through some of the highlights of rural Suffolk. Leaving Lavenham, the first stop is Long Melford, with its mile-long high street lined with antique shops, inviting places for a morning coffee, a local brewery and two Tudor mansions, Melford Hall and Kentwell Hall. From there, continue to the picturesque village of Boxford, a former Anglo-Saxon settlement, before heading on to Polstead, associated with the dark but intriguing story of the Red Barn murder from around 200 years ago. The route then continues to Stoke by Nayland, where the church tower appears in several paintings by the 17th-century artist John Constable, before returning to Lavenham for the evening.

Begin the day exploring Lavenham, a medieval maze of half-timbered houses and one of Suffolk’s best-known ‘Wool Towns’. The route continues through gently rolling countryside to the picturesque village of Hartest, before reaching Ickworth House, an unusual oval-shaped stately home located just outside the historic market town of Bury St Edmunds. With its narrow streets, historic buildings and traditional Suffolk character, Bury St Edmunds is well worth exploring. Walk through the impressive stone gateway to the remains of the abbey, surrounded by beautiful gardens that stretch towards the River Lark. The cathedral is topped by a striking tower added to mark the new millennium. The town also hosts a market twice a week and is home to The Nutshell, reputed to be the smallest pub in Britain.
