Tour description
Old traderoute
Let’s cycle along a medieval route between the Bohemian kingdom and the Holy Roman Empire that connects two majestic cities – Prague and Regensburg. Both, thanks to their unique architecture and preserved centers, are enlisted in the UNESCO heritage list.
A way of culture, nature and history
The route will lead us to countless castles, chateaux, monasteries, and through some of the finest nature in the area. Soon after leaving Prague we pass the most visited castle of Bohemia – Karlštejn, a mighty imperial fortress. And next we can admire the “beer kingdom” of Pilsen. Not just Pilsner, but a rich jewish culture and the lively atmosphere of a 2015 European Culture Capital waits for us there! Another mighty fortress in Švihov guards the entrance to the extraordinary Chodsko region with Klatovy as its capital. Of the many natural riches we should at least mention the Regen River’s nature reserves.
Part of the Santiago pilgrim route
Between Prague and Pilsen our tour follows the best-known pilgrimage of Europe, the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. Winding along the routes on bike you might even hear the ancient pilgrims footsteps, or at least an old tune sung to pass the time...
It can go yet further…
From Regesnburg on you can easilly continue biking either along the Danube towards Passau or Vienna. Another option could be to continue towards the Bavarian capital Munich to experience some of the best german beer traditions.
NEW ROUTING 2024!!! Two central european pearls. And much more! The mighty Karlštejn castle with unique paintings, Pilsen - the beer capital of the world! Fairytale Švihov castle, picturesque Chodsko region, monasteries and towns in the Regen valley. The Old trade route offers a lot!

Itinerary
Arrival to Prague - not included in tour price!
Show dayHotels: Night in Prague is not included as most of our guests prefer to stay more nights. We recommend to use one of our standard partner hotels (3/4/5* Standard) as our route description, GPS files, maps etc. starts from there. If you decide to book your own hotel additional 20 € administration fee will apply.
Please note we require hotel with 24/7 reception + bike storage room. We do not accept Air B&B accommodation and it will be your responsibility on day 1 to find way by bike to our starting point.
We start our trip from Prague along the beautiful Vltava and Berounka rivers all the way to the mighty Karlštejn castle, built in the 14th century to serve as a calm retreat for the Bohemian kings, but moreso as an unconquerable fortress guarding the Bohemian and Imperial crown jewels! With gentle terrrain, well-marked bike routes, and beautiful, wooded countryside, this first part of the day is a popular trip for Czech and foreign visitors alike. Following the banks of the Vltava will reveal beautiful views of Prague before we reach the Aula Regia monastery in Zbraslav and veer towards the quiet Berounka. Along this river, we bike through small, picturesque villages like Dobřichovice with its chateau. By midday you can either visit the Karlstejn castle and village or, should it be not enough biking for you, there is always the option to enjoy to the Karst region of Malá and Velká Amerika!
In the afternoon we can admire the beauties of the Czech Karst natural protected area. We start with a ride through the limestone canyon of the Berounka river, soon to arrive at the old royal town of Beroun with its nicely preserved gates and town centre. Saying goodbye to the Berounka, we will follow the small river Litavka that leads us to two gothic castles. In the valley the Žebrák castle perfectly represents a romantic ruin, while the second castle, Točník, on a hill, is perfectly restored. From here, only a little pedaling remains to today’s lodgings in the small town of Žebrák or Zbiroh.
Today the beautiful hills of the Brdy nature reserve greet us on our way to the town of Dobřív. Here we can admire a 14th-century stone bridge and perfectly preserved iron water mills from 17th century – the biggest in the country! Following the Klabava river we first check out the sleepy town of Rokycany before we slowly reach our day’s destination – Plzeň (Pilsen). Rightfully called the world capital of beer, the legendary Pilsner Urquell is brewed here. We suggest visiting the brewery itself to taste the best large-production beer in world right at its birthplace!
Before you start biking, we do recommend visiting the Pilsen town centre. You can admire the third biggest Synagoge in the world or climb the highest church tower in Czech Republic with a beautifull view of the countryside and town. Back on the bike, we follow our route south to visit the memorial of the victims of communism. Afterwards, we bike along the Radbuza river, which will guide us through a big part of today, through a small natural preserve to the towns of Dobřany and Chotěšov with monumental monastery. Meandering with Radbuza we end up in Horšovský Týn - a cozy town with a castle, chateau and super lovely square. From here it is just across a hill to Domažlice, the centre of a proud people called Chodové with their own specific culture. Founded in the 13th century it served as an important royal presence, and today exemplifies a thriving Czech town. In the Middle Ages the locals were responsible for the border defense and thus released from field labor for the aristocrats. Many permutations and ancient habits mark the culture here, like the use of bagpipes in music! Take time to admire the old town square with its imposing tower, or simply listen to the song of the night guard!
Today we continue by bike across the old Iron Curtain border to the german town of Fürth. From Fürth, known for its dragon festival and dragon museum, we bike along the river Cham to its confluence with the river Regen and onwards to the old town of Cham, passing through its Beer Gate and Old Town. Along the lovely Regen we meander to the small but cozy Roding, dating back to 9th century and called the gate to Bavarian forest, where we spend the first german night.
On the last biking day we stay with the river Regen, biking through numerous nature preserves and wetland areas with many endangered birds and more! And not „just“ nature awaits us today: we bike through an area called Schlossareal (Chateau land) because of its numerous chateaux, castles, ruins and monasteries. Among many, one can highlight the monasteries in Walderbach and Rheinbach. Our day’s destination is the stunning town of Regensburg. With over 1500 historical buildings in its town centre, one will not be surprised to find it on the UNESCO heritage list!
Regensburg
Show dayThe last day of the tour is dedicated to the sightseeing of Regensburg. With a history running back some 2000 years, we find here many Celtic, Teutonic, Roman and Holy Roman Empire wonders! Highlights include the oldest bridge in central Europe, the imperial palace, a fantastic cathedral… but that is just the start. For those who would like to prolong the journey, we can happily offer a way to the bavarian capital, Munich, or start a journey along the Danube!

Accommodation is one of the most important parts of each trip that strongly influences the final look of it. We make our best to offer you the best possible accommodation in the prefered category. The hotels we offer are either comfortable small hotels or quite guesthouses both in 3* quality, all of it rather small and with personality than big chain. All the tours have accommodation in or near the town/village centres so you can spend the afternoon and evening after biking exploring the town itself or simply enjoy the peace of the place.
