Tour description

Embark on a cycling journey through the Loire Valley from Blois to Angers, passing iconic sites such as Chambord, Chaumont-sur-Loire, Amboise, Chenonceau, Azay-le-Rideau, Chinon, Fontevraud, and Saumur.

An immersive cycling holiday between Blois and Angers

From Blois to Angers, you’ll discover the many faces of the Loire Valley. Quiet cycle paths and small rural roads guide you past some of the region’s most celebrated Renaissance châteaux, including Chambord, Chaumont-sur-Loire, Chenonceau, Villandry, Azay-le-Rideau, and Ussé — the château that inspired the Sleeping Beauty fairytale.

This stretch of the Loire also hides treasures such as the Abbey of Fontevraud and impressive medieval fortresses like Langeais, Chinon, and Angers, the latter home to the largest known medieval tapestry.

Along the way, you’ll experience the shifting colors of the Loire landscape and spot traditional “toues,” the flat-bottomed boats that glide between the river’s sandbanks. And no visit to this region would be complete without a taste of its renowned wines — notably those from the Chinon and Saumur vineyards.

Departures from March 1st to October 31th
Low season logistic supplement: from March 1st to April 12th and from October 9th to October 31st

After visiting the château, you can choose a quiet detour through Neuvy and its many ponds (+26 km) or continue more directly to Bracieux. Enjoy the shaded paths along the Crosson creek on your way to the Château de Cheverny, known as the inspiration for Captain Haddock’s Moulinsart in the Tintin stories. Alternatively, ride through the vineyards toward the fortified site of Fougères-sur-Bièvre. From there, follow the Loire along a route lined with traditional “toues” boats toward Chaumont-sur-Loire, known for its fairytale château and its renowned International Garden Festival. The final stretch brings you to the beautiful medieval town of Amboise, where the Château d’Amboise stands as a symbol of the transition between Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

Amboise – Tours via Chenonceaux

Distance 62 KmShow day
4 Day
Distance: 62 km (+155 m) Start your day with an excursion to Chenonceaux. Cycle through forest paths and along the riverbanks to reach the Château de Chenonceau, a Renaissance masterpiece spanning the Cher River. After visiting the château, follow the Cher downstream all the way to Tours.

Continue along the riverbanks before climbing gently through forested paths to reach the Château d’Azay-le-Rideau. Return to the Loire and follow the dike to the Château d’Ussé, said to have inspired Perrault’s Sleeping Beauty. Your route leads into Chinon with a beautiful overlook of the town before descending into its maze of medieval streets along the Vienne River.

Chinon – Saumur

Arrive in the lovely village of Candes-Saint-Martin, built of pale freestone, and stop to admire its 12th-century collegiate church. Continue to Montsoreau, one of “The Most Beautiful Villages in France,” built around its riverside château. From here, you may choose to climb toward Fontevraud (+12 km round trip), known for its magnificent abbey and the tombs of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart. Otherwise continue straight toward Saumur. Along the way, you will pass troglodyte villages carved into the cliffs and have opportunities to taste Saumur wines in local cellars. End your day in Saumur, with time to explore its château and impressive dungeons.

Saumur – Angers

Distance 67 KmShow day
7 Day
Distance: 67 km (+268 m) Today’s stage offers a wealth of cultural and natural highlights. In Trèves, you’ll see a striking 30-meter keep — the last remnant of a 15th-century fortress. Before reaching Gennes, enjoy a forested stretch and a peaceful pond, considered one of the finest picnic spots along the Loire route. Beyond Gennes, the landscape becomes wilder, with views of islands scattered across the river. Cross the Loire and Loiret at Les Ponts-de-Cé and continue to the confluence with the Maine, which you follow upstream to Angers. Don’t miss a visit to the château, home to the extraordinary Apocalypse Tapestry.

The hotels we offer are either comfortable small hotels or quite guesthouses both in 3* quality, all of it rather small and with personality than big chain. All the tours have accommodation in or near the town/village centres so you can spend the afternoon and evening after biking exploring the town itself or simply enjoy the peace of the place.
