Why cycle in Switzerland?

Switzerland is the country that makes other cycling destinations feel slightly ordinary by comparison — and it rewards every extra effort with scenery so spectacular it stops you mid-pedal. The nine national cycling routes cover over 3,000 km and are maintained to an extraordinarily high standard, passing through territory that ranges from the Rhine's broad valley floor to mountain cols that earn every metre of their height. For those seeking a gentler introduction, the thermal spa towns accessible on the Spa Tour offer Swiss quality without Alpine extremes. The Dolomites road bike circuit extends the Swiss alpine experience into neighbouring Italy, delivering some of the most technically demanding and visually arresting cycling in Europe. Switzerland is not where you come for effortless cruising — it is where you come for a cycling experience that stays with you for years.

Popular Cycling Routes in Switzerland

The Rhine Route follows Europe's great river from its Alpine source to Basel, passing through dramatic gorges and historic towns. The Rhône Route heads through the Valais wine region to Lake Geneva. The Lakes Route connects Lakes Constance, Zurich and Lucerne on gentler terrain ideal for those wanting scenery without serious climbing.

What Makes Cycling in Switzerland Easy

Switzerland's nine national cycling routes are superbly signposted and maintained. The train network allows cyclists to skip difficult sections or return from tour endpoints easily. Lake shore routes are flat and accessible. The country is compact and distances between overnight stops are well judged for comfortable daily stages.

Self Guided Bike Tours in Switzerland

Our Switzerland tours include quality hotel accommodation, luggage transfer, detailed route maps and GPS tracks. We can arrange tours that use the train network strategically to make the most of the best cycling while avoiding the most challenging Alpine passes.

Who Are These Tours For

Switzerland suits cyclists who want world-class scenery and infrastructure combined. Lake shore tours are easy and family-friendly. Mountain routes are moderate to strenuous and best suited to experienced cyclists who are comfortable with climbing.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is cycling safe in Switzerland?

Switzerland is a very safe cycling destination. The national route network is impeccably signed and largely follows dedicated paths or low-traffic roads. Swiss drivers give cyclists wide berths, and mountain roads — while sometimes steep — carry far less traffic than you might expect. Tunnels occasionally require care, but well-lit cycle alternatives are usually provided. Public transport integration is exceptional: trains, post buses and lake ferries all accommodate bikes.

Are there hills?

Frankly, yes — quite a lot of them. Switzerland is a mountainous country and even the valley routes involve more cumulative climbing than in Germany or the Netherlands. The Rhine and Rhone valley routes are the least demanding, but even these include regular undulations. If significant climbing is a concern, an e-bike is strongly recommended — they are widely available for hire across Switzerland and transform the experience on steeper sections.

Can beginners cycle in Switzerland?

With an e-bike, yes. Without motorised assistance, Switzerland requires a reasonable base level of fitness and confidence on bikes. The valley routes are achievable for motivated beginners who are comfortable covering 40–50 km per day over rolling terrain, but Switzerland is not ideal as a first-ever cycle tour. We recommend gaining some experience elsewhere — Germany, Netherlands or Denmark — before tackling Swiss terrain.

How expensive is cycling in Switzerland?

Switzerland is one of Europe's most expensive countries, and cycling accommodation and food prices reflect this. Expect to pay significantly more per night than in Germany or Eastern Europe. The good news is that the quality is consistently high, public transport backup is excellent, and the route network is maintained to a standard that justifies the cost. Budget cyclists can reduce costs by camping — Switzerland has beautiful campsite options along most national routes.

Tour Prague-Dresden Tour

My wife and I rode from Prague to Dresden from June 13-18. Europe Bike Tours made the trip fantastic. From the orientation meeting to the detailed maps, instructions and written guides, everything was clear and we felt totally confident taking on the ride. We loved the cost included the bikes, and the fact that the bikes came with painniers, helmets and a repair kit (which we never needed)....
